Wasn’t a big selection back then. Fenwick was top of the line.
The old Fenwick honey colored surf blanks are in big demand for collectors. As well as the old Harnell/Harrington black glass surf blanks.
I own three Fenwick surf rods, 10.5 & 11 ft single piece blanks. Casting them will wear you out. Two are 1972 and one is 1979.
I fished Bob Hall pier with one of them around 2008, had several older dudes walk up and asked if I would sell it. One guy said he had about of dozen of them in his collection. He fished with Billy Sandifer in the 70s, on Padre Island National Seashore.
Here's the 79 model with my Son fishing PINS. Fuji just arrived with Graphite reel seats so this blank has one of the first run copies.
This is one of the 72 models, which I have owned, since that time. I was a regular on the old Gulf Coast Fishing Pier in Galveston back then, teenager spending summers for days at a pop with the old Galveston surf fishing bunch. One had to earn a spot on either side of the T-Head. All full of custom Fenwick and or Harnell surf rods. These old red grips, have been on this rod the entire time. The reel seat is a VARMAC Brass/Chrome model of that era. I first wrapped it with Varmac stainless steel guides, replacing them with Fuji's around 1984. These old Fuji's, have dual rings. Outside ring is ceramic and the inside ring is a glow in the dark ring. If you aim a flashlight at the rings at night, they will glow for about an hour before needing another shot of light, to regenerate their illuminecence.
Billy Sandifer down around the 58 mile marker on Padre Island National Seashore. Miss that old Surfman - RIP.
Dug around some of the other gear Joe Doggett and other Outdoor editors and Industry types of that ERA used, and found one of my setups. Always built my own tackle, and then, not many around who did the work, and fished it at this level of involvement. Like surfing and surfboard builders of that era - a world we pursued when the waves were flat - Texas, yeah we fished a ton, and salt ran in our veins around the clock.
1973-78 or so era, this was top of the line. I started building my own sticks in 1972, and this is one of that era.
Fenwick glass popping blank - built on Bainbridge Island Washington, west side of the Puget Sound, when Fenwick was here building the best blanks of this era. Sold out to Japan somewhere in late 1980s. I can't remember the blank model, its buried under the grips and reel seat with the old Fenwick logo.
Varmac Chrome/Brass screw up pistol grip reel seat.
First generation Fuji ceramic guides (replaced the old Varmac chromes in 79).
ABU AMBASSADEUR 5500C - 1972 Model and top reel for bass and inshore plug and work fishing of this era. I bought this new in the box, at the Pearland Texas Gibson on Main Street.
Bingo plug - Houston build - B1x model.
Tight Lines from Another Time
I can’t find it (Which is worrying me…) but I have my Great Aunt’s rod by pepper 7’ popping rod that is almost identical to that somewhere.
Still have three eagle claw yellow popping rods and several academy knock offs with 5500 and one 4600 ambassadors for bait fishing, and had a buddy make me a updated version of those 70’s rigs with recoil guides and new blank after a couple younger cousins poked fun at my “Old School rigs”

Good equipment makes all the difference in the world. IMO it does anyway.

No doubt, I splurge on certain things and keep using what’s always worked for years for me. The boys think my cheese slid off the cracker bc I stilll use strawberry/white tout tails.

Nice. I’m a tackle junkie, so I keep my equipment up date so to speak.
Strawberry and white hogie swimming shad was money back in the day.
