Bobistheoilguy.com has all the geeky answers to all the oil related questions you could think of-and then some. But a brief summary is-practically any oil you can find, that meets the manufacturers specifications will work just fine. For about any brand of oil you can think of, somebody has posted Used Oil Analysis results that showed that oil was just fine when tested AFTER a 'normal' usage cycle. Pretty much all of the 'brand X is great but brand Z is awful' is just not true.

With that in mind, the cheapest synthetic I can find is what I use.

Conventional oils are a little more 'gasket friendly' than synthetics. The 'high mileage' oils probably include some ingredient that helps gaskets to 'swell' more than regular oils, to help combat worn out gaskets.

I have heard people say all types of stuff about synthetics and conventional oils, I think a lot of it is BS, or at least some of what is said of synthetics is either pure BS or only applies to some specialty synthetics.

Most of your synthetics from what I have been told, are just better quality refining process of the same crude oil, with the same additives. Now some are very different, those are very expensive, typically high performance or race application lubricants.

The info you got about Pennzoil, is correct, it is a low grade oil, along with Quaker State, and a few others. There is no reason you could not switch to a common synthetic oil. The big difference will be the price, it will be a little better oil, that will cost more, but not a lot more.

I don’t use synthetics most of the time, there are applications I do prefer certain synthetics.

Mobil 1 is what I use. I used to use synthetic in my mowers until I learned about oil with zinc added. Now I use Kawasaki in my small engines and Mobil 1 in my cars/trucks.

I used Valvoline or Castrol. I did use pennzoil marine two stroke oil in my 93 yamaha 175 outboard because that is what the original owner ran. In 16 years never had a problem with that.

I have used pennzoil 10w30 for quite a while. Went to pennzoil 10w30 high mileage when vehicles reach 100,000 miles. Usually sell the vehicle on average at around 200,000 miles. Never had an engine failure. I don’t follow the recommended oil change schedule. Usually no more than 4,000 miles with new oil filter between changes.

I am not. My dad used Amsoil in his sprint cars and never had an engine failure. I’ve used it in all my motorcycles that I’ve owned and never had an issue in anything.

Store brand synthetic blend. My 06 Silverado 4.8 is knocking on the door of 400k. It’s had store brands mixed with a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer added between oil changes since 100k.

                        I tend to agree

The filter is more important than the oil brand. I would always pay extra for a premium filter like Wix. If you run Mobil 1 with a crappy filter then ain't no point!

Mobile 1 High Mileage in any of my gassers with 150k or more. Rotella in the diesel. And Rotella in the new LS motor for break-in before the truck got wrecked.
