Definitely book directly through the airline website. My experience is that most airlines dont allow free upgrades at the airport. I've asked and am usually told that I can purchase a different seat upgrade.

i have a united credit card and i always get to pick my seats due to status obtained through purchases. no fees for checked bags either. the card does have an annual fee but the benefits more than outweigh the fee.

Lately that 24 hour thing has not helped I guess we will start purchasing the early bird check in.
I typically fly Business Select or Anytime which assures A15 and A30 or better respectively. I'm A16 on a flight tomorrow on Anytime, but on the Wanna Get Away I'm almost always A45-B15 depending on check in. The top two Southwest classes mentioned are generally the same price as all the other carrier's economy, and freedom to pick a seat up front is great when we fly as a family.

Not sure if they still do or not but American would open their seats up for grabs starting 24 hours before departure. I used to have good luck with doing that way. Lately though the flights are so full that trick may not work any more.

I booked southwest and added the hotel room. Got it for a pretty good deal. We'll rent a car when we get there. Thanks all for the help

Look into Turo for the rental. I’ve used it 4 or 5 times now in varying locations and have always had a great experience. Last trip was a wedding in Omaha, NE and was able to rent a Chevy suburban to fit the whole family plus baby and paid less than a midsize SUV would have cost from a big rental company.

Yeah, I don't want to have to rent a compact driving around comifornia with those people. I was looking at the larger suvs and trucks but they were expensive.
