I'm taking my son to Anaheim in January for opening round of Supercross and the booking places charge you to pick your seats on every plane, added up to $250. If we just get to the airport earlier can we pick our seats without the added cost? I don't want us to have to sit separately from each other. TIA

It depends on what ticket you buy. There is something called "basic" economy, where they assign your seat at the gate, and you should assume you will not get to pick seats with this option, even at the gate (My wife and I joke this is skuz class because they don't give two ****s about you, and yes, that's mostly what we fly). Also, you pay extra for a checked bag.
Then there is regular economy, which sometimes costs slightly more, sometimes a lot more, where you pick your seat online, and have to pay extra for a checked bag.
The third economy option is premium economy which is an additional cost above the ticket value, but usually your checked bag is included. There there is business and first class.

If you don’t have status, I’d never book with an assigned seat. That’s good way to get you bumped from an oversold flight. Also book directly with the airline and not a “booking service”. It’s easier if you have to change the flight.

Meant to say “I’d never book WITHOUT an assigned seat”. Pay the extra and select your seat.

I fly Southwest most of the time. You get 2 checked bags free per ticket. I also opt up for the early checkin which put's you more towards the first people on the plane so you can pick your seats.
I am usually flying with my wife and daughter so yeah we all want to sit together. We have had to fly other airlines and have had seats apart from each other. The kindness of strangers is pretty much gone imho when asking them to switch so everyone can sit with each other.

Buy directly from the airlines and get what you want. The Orbitz/kayak/expedia-type places offer cheaper tickets because you get less. No carry-on, can't sit together, seats in the back...etc. .By the time you get what you want, it's going to be very close if not identical to just doing it with the airline and paying for what you want in your flight experience.
They know you want to sit together and that's why they charge you more. You're going to have to pay for it if you want it.
I don't believe you'll be allowed to pick seats at the airport at no cost.

Too many unknowns in your post. If you are flying a discount line like Frontier then yes, you pay for everything separate. If you don't have status, then you won't find many perks. And book direct with the airlines. If you go through an agency, the airline will require you to go back through the agency if you need to make any changes in your itinerary. You can check prices online and buying direct from the airline hasn't been more and is sometimes less than the travel service. Another tip if you want the hassle; check out the airline credit cards for instant status and free bags and then cancel it after your trip.

Lately that 24 hour thing has not helped I guess we will start purchasing the early bird check in.

@manwitaplan, exactly, and southwest doesn't check. I've flown to Ca 3 times this year for family and on one of each leg we continually saw people come up to the gate in wheel chairs and be rolled down to the plane, then giggle as they walked on.
Currently the earlybird checkin helps, but Southwest is selling their "A" class boarding to the highest bidder anymore, AKA Business Select and Anytime. And now they've added Wanna Get Away 'Plus'.
I miss the old days when airlines loaded from the rear to the front of the plane.....
And OP, Gooooooo Tomac!
