    What Tracking Dog?

I think I've decided I want to give a tracking dog a try again. I went for it a couple of years ago with a bloodhound and while his nose was exceptional, he was just too dang big and rough with the kids. I am looking for a breed that is on the smaller side that will get along inside as well. Something in that 15-30lb range.

    Suggestions please!

I have a blue lacy, he’s been tough on me….lol
After 1.5 years of once a week obedience training, and twice a week of dog day care he’s finally a joy to have. He tracks pretty good and he’s the perfect ranch dog now.
He will be 2 in January, and just shy of 40lbs.

Dachshunds are a pet/hunt breed that comes to mind. Don’t get a Jagd- loved mine but he wasn’t a good pet around the house

I thought about that breed but that's also what I was afraid of.

I too have been considering this, and my thought was to go with a Jagd. I think I've read before that AC has one. Can you guys expound a little more on the negatives you've seen with the Jadg?

They can tend to be aggressive.

I've had 2 Blue Lacy's that were incredible..... both were kept in the house and really great dogs. But both of my Lacy's weighed around 45 lbs.
I also had a Border Collie that was an amazing tracker, but I think it was because of the personality of that particular dog more than anything. Our current Lacy sure makes life easy for us when it comes to tracking.
                  Good luck on your search.

Jagd is an awesome animal for its size. They are full of energy and have a strong drive to hunt and track. Mine was great with kids too. I got her as a puppy and she has been awesome. If it’s gonna be an inside dog then for what you want I’d pick the Dachshund.

I was initially going to say Blue Lacy, I have one also, but they are not small.

My Jagd terrier will track and would also bay hogs. Don’t put a cut vest on one though. Their speed is what makes them able to take on a hog.

As far as them being aggressive, they are if you’re a deer or hog. Mine has been wonderful around people

Mine was great around my kids/wife. Had to watch him when other people came over. He killed everything on 4 legs he could get ahold of. Was not good around other peoples dogs- Dropped him on a ranch to track and when done he killed one of the cats. Prey drive that high doesn’t make a good pet in my opinion.

Jagd Terriers will track- bay- and are great in the field. Mine would not work on a lead- and at the end of the track I had to tether him to a tree or he would get after someone touching his deer.

I trained mine on a lead as soon as she was old enough. I think that made all the difference. I wouldn’t trust her without one

They are hunting and killing machines.
