I'm looking to get a standard dachshund for this reason. Know of a guy right now who has a litter that is from a bloodline of tracking dogs. Mom is registered with UBT I believe? Pretty intense trackers, and great family dogs, per my research. I have kids, and other animals, so need a dog that can mix well with all, but also know when its time to go to work.

Jack Russell from Africa is the best dog I’ve ever been around. Tracking & as a pet.

I just got a Dachshund puppy off of Maurice Chambers a few weeks ago. He has a nose like look other. He's only 10 weeks or so but he isn't a bit afraid of my Rotties either. I'm not interested in training him in blood trailing, maybe as a hobby.

Depends on your goals. Tracking for family and friends? Tracking for the public? If you’re wanting to track pretty seriously and not just a hobby I would suggest getting some kind of cur/hound mix. You want some size on a dog when it comes to running down wounded ones. A little one just can’t keep up or hold it’s own on a broken leg deer

But, if you’re strictly looking for an effective dog that’s in that size range I would go with a JRT from hunting lines

No real particular goal. For sure myself, family and friends. It's more of just wanting another working dog again since its been a few years. One of those things where if the dog turns out being good enough to where I feel it would be worthy to charge someone and I could go onto a strangers place with confidence, I'm not opposed to that either.

We have a dachshund and have been extremely happy with him. He loves my kids and wife. Great with our other dogs and is a tracking machine. My wife runs him and can manage him really well due to his size.
I got him from John Jeanneney out of NY.

Didn’t John write the tracking dog book? I’ve heard that name before.

He did. He was an awesome individual. He passed away in 2021.

I’m sorry to hear that. I bought his book. Ran a tracking dog years ago(blood hound) I forwarded it to a member here a few years ago.

Anybody use a spaniel blood line for tracking?

That was my first thought when I read the post. Pretty cool to have a dog from him. That guy wrote the tracking bible.
