i think this is the best all around comparison for most people to use so that they can see what how they compare especially when talkin on the net..

there are plenty of people who can do better than this but its a fair comparison and can be used as a good range for a "good shot" as compared to a very good who can do about half that, like 2 in @40yrds... and still some or better than this

what I try to advise my customers that are new to bow hunting is to limit their hunting range to a maximum of a 4" group, if they can hold 4" at 30 yards that would be their max range, but some struggle to do it at 20 yards... and some quickly learn to keep it under 4" at 40 or 50 yards.... I do not encourage them to shoot animals this far out but to use it for a "sure kill" zone where they can feel sure of their own abilities to deliver the arrow to the boiler room, and get it done...

After 25 + years of bowhunting with traditional equipment I still have a "mental issue" with shooting an animal over 25 yards. I am now shooting a Mathews DXT and have to agree with the 1" per 10 yards....seems consistant with my groupings. Hope to improve that group over time, and get over my max distance for a shot hang up.

I won't shoot at an animal over 30 and be comfortable
Sometimes I'm slapping arrows at 30 and sometimes I group about 1" to 1-1/2" out to 2".

Shooting within a pie plate at 50 yards is acceptable, all kill zone. But shooting longer distances while practicing, makes your clutch hunting distances all the more easy.

If we're talking more than one arrow groups, I'd have to go with the one inch per ten yard formula. With a longbow or recurve that is some smoking hot grouping.

When I was practicing out to 50 I would try and keep most of my shots in an empty cigarette pack hanging on my target. Not all hit it but most did and the others were close.
Now I'd be doing good to hit the target... Nah, I ain't that bad but I haven't picked up a bow since my axis doe hunt at the end of Feb. Dang tendonitis...
