It's a Polaris. Drive it like you stole it!

Mine has started to whine in high range. Is that a belt going bad, or transmission?

Sounds like your buddy will be doing a top end before changing a belt.

The way I have always done it is if I am traveling 10mph or less, I use low gear. Above that, high gear.
If under a load, then I run in low gear.

On 3rd Ranger. We have always been told to stick with Low if offroad and going less than 15-20 or so mph. High is reserved for higher speeds, roadways or fairly smooth terrian.

Honestly, don't over think it. If the terrain requires slower driving for whatever reason, low probably should be used. Tooling around on maintained ranch roads or other areas that can be driven safely at higher speeds, high is the ticket.

From the responses in their thread it doesn't sound like it makes much difference either way.

Looks like the owners manual says low gear

              Gear Selector
Low gear is the primary driving range for your vehicle. High gear is intended for use on hard-packed surfaces with light loads. Using high gear for heavy loads, hilly terrain or in wet, muddy conditions will increase the chance of drive belt burning. See the Drive Belt Wear/Burn section on Drive Belt Wear/Burn.

2009 Ranger. I run it in high 99% of the time. I have changed the belt once.

Driving on a road in low gear? Walking sounds more pleasant.

I was told the same thing, or similar, about my Ranger and Sportman. I was never told an MPH, but basically said when driving at slow speeds, keep in in low.

Possibly a roller. I just had the shop replace both rollers, my belt, and much to my displeasure my primary clutch due to the rollers failing and the belt slipping. Warped my shivs on the primary.

Bummer. I'm gonna haul mine to the shop later today. I don't have time to try to tear into myself. Hopefully it won't be too bad. We'll see.....

I just traded in my 2013, we ran it in high 95% of the time. Had a little over 5,000 miles on it and they were all on the ranch working. Never replaced a belt or had any problems with it at all.....
