I have a set of Chippewa side zip snake boots. But have only worn them maybe 8 times since I bought them 10 years ago. I'm in rubber boots or tennis shoes most of the time. And watch where I step. I've run across several rattlers and others over the years. Winter, I'm in Lacross insulated neoprene. But still watch where I step.

Chips for doing work around the ranch. UsuallyRed Wing Pecos for deer hunting unless it’s cold. Then I’ll go to an insulated lace up.

You guys that can get your feet and calves into Chips, must have noodles below the knee! I tried to get a pair on the other day, and it was just not happening! I couldn't even get the ball of my foot past the ankle of the boot!! I can get into Rocky boots but can't even begin to zip the silly things up past my calves! I had Redhead boots for many years, but they don't make them any longer.....so now I'm on the hunt.

Check out the LaCrosse Alpha or Aerobeads. They are slip ons but have a gusseted calf to help get them to fit.

I do have a pair of rubber boots I use for archery as well.

Go buy another pair of snake boots. The shin protection is just as important as the snake protection. We do leasework days in 105 degree temps out west and yes they can get warm but never have I been so uncomfortable I say, "I'm taking them off because I'm too hot". It's not that bad. Couldn't imagine being that sensitive that I would take them off....especially with the peace of mind they come with from snakes or raking your shins across dead cedar limbs, brush, mesquite thorns, cactus etc.. Put them on and lets go to work. You can cool your tootsies off at the end of the day.

I am a guide and guide hunts all over central and west Texas. I wear snake boots every time I go out but it’s mostly for the cactus. Nice to have when the animal falls in a cactus patch. Or stalking with a hunter that doesn’t have them to knock down a trail. I will say growing up on a 2000 acre ranch we never wore snake boots. Just regular cowboy boots. For me anyway snake boots make me a little careless when it comes to snakes just go and don’t think about them. And that’s not good.

Every time I've gone to buy snake boots I'm reminded by my late grandpa who lived his entire life in South Texas without snake boots. When he was 88 and went at the rattle on his front porch with a broom I knew I was a punk. lol

Used to wear snake guards while dove hunting at the farm in Milam Co. because it was known for rattlers but I never saw any and just wore regular boots. Fast forward to 6 years ago when I got on the lease in Mason Co. where I have had three very close calls with rattlers. I now have two pair of snake boots. In one case the snake was elevated on a ledge and he could have easily hit above regular work boots.

My uncle stepped on a large rattlesnake at Aquilla dove hunting years ago. He thought it was a cow patty until it started moving. If reverse long and high jump was a competition he would be the record holder. He wore snake chaps after that while hunting doves anywhere with grass higher than ankle deep. If he was up on you on the dove count you just mention rattlers and he would start watching the ground more than the sky. Miss him every dove season.

Snake boots always at the ranch.......I have killed many and have had friends who were hit by them before. Luckily, they had snake boots on as well. Smart investment....

Regular boots and snake gaiters if I’m in some awful stuff.

Had a buddy come with me to lake Meredith wearing a pair of snake boots. After a 3 mile hike he had blisters the size of silver dollars. He walked around like Yosemite Sam! Wound up having to call the hunt early because of that.

Snake boots are good insurance until a lotta hiking needs to be done in my experience, but YMMV.

Danner Sharptails for me anytime I’m in the brush country. Including the cooler months. They help keep the thorns and sand burrs out of my legs and truck. Plus there water proof and more comfortable than my tennis shoes. Never have tested them against a rattle bug but I have killed a ton of them with my pistola, shotgun and truck with them on.

Because based on an earlier thread, some folks in East Texas thinks it makes you more of a bad*** country fella going in the woods without them in the pine tree country. Only city folks wear snake boots don't you know that??.

And for the record I'm with you. Out west and in South Texas especially...
