I had that done at the beginning of June.

Then you are upgraded on current generation refrigerant, new warranty coverage vs paying a good chunk to keep an older system band aided & still pay high cost for refrigerant if leaks soon assuming it’s a R-22 unit

Our unit is getting older and had one of the big name company’s come out and get it going. Just asked for curiosity how much a new unit would run and they said about $15k. This is for a small 1,500 sq ft house. I didn’t ask what size as im hoping to get another year or more but based on everyone else, that is a high cost.

We have another l guy coming to check it this evening. What should a new unit cost on a small house? Roughly 1500 feet
It’s replaced a 4 ton and a 3.5ton in march for $15750
They replaced the furnaces as well

$7800 last week for complete system on neighborhood propane. We almost didnt change the furnace due to propane conversion kits being backordered or limited. A conversion kit was found.
1500 sq ft house… or so.

Everything house related has huge amounts of profit built in. My uncle was a HVAC one man show for nearly 40yrs, recently retired. He worked a few days a week and made a good living. Most 4ton units are somewhere around $3500-$4500 depending on brand and other factors. A plain switchout will take maybe 1/2 day and they will often charge $5000+ for labor.
My last 4 ton changeout about 2yrs ago was $5500 IIRC.
Find a small company ( basically one guy and his helpers ) and get a reasonable quote.
You can also buy from someone like HVAC Direct and they will ship the system to you. Then you can install with the exception of handling the refrigerant. Pay a licensed guy to do recover and charge it on a weekday evening or the weekend.

Pricing varies widely depending on what is being installed and who is doing it.
These threads typically bring out the posts bragging about the cheap price they got, and not the ones that went super premium.
I'm not in your market, but I'm betting that if you got 5 bids from different companies, all for base-efficiency equipment (rent house) that $10k quote would probably be in the middle of the spread.

Two years ago we replaced one of our two units that were 18 years at the time. We installed a 2.5 ton heat pump 16 seer attic and outside unit for roughly $8k and they pitched in a new water heater to boot. Two weeks ago we replaced the other unit a 3.5 ton with 16 seer unit for $11k this time. That includes new wiring, pads, snubber, etc. both come with 10 year warranty. We also received multiple quotes. Good luck.
