How long to double your salary?

I grew up hoeing cotton and hauling sugar cane. Whole different world now

I stacked brick from a pile on the ground, to pallets, one after the next…all day.

It was punishment when I was 11 for something stupid I did. Turned into employment/cheap labor during the S&L crisis of the late 80s. I didn’t know that until a LOOONG time later.

I’ve been on the payroll for 32 years in different capacities. I have never filled out a job application in my life.

Ive done it twice in my 13+ year Oil and gas career. But i started at the bottom only making $33k/yr. It took a long time and lots of work. No Sleep, weight gain, shaved some years off my life for sure.

But Ive made a life out of it!

Keep working hard and be ready for when the opportunity comes, then the money will come.

            X10000

Work harder than the rest. Learn what most won’t. Keep hammering and it’ll pay off.

Think it was about 2-3 years in when I doubled it. Hadn’t quite doubled that but have came real close.

Crazy for to rationalize but my bonus this year was more than my first yearly salary... my first "real" job was in 2000 and I have 5x it since.

Took me 4 years to double my first real salary job out of college. Would of took me 10 years if I stayed at the same company.
Year 12 out of College I’m at about 5x my first salary working half the hours I worked my first year.

Biggest lesson I’ve learned in my professional career is to make big salary moves you need to change companies. I’ve yet to make it 4 years at one company. My last two switches were a 30% and 50% raise going to work for new companies.
You are just a number to large companies and they will replace you in a heart beat. Don’t be scared to make moves to get paid.

                  Love this!

I'm in the rtp camp. When starting off at Jack squat and doubling it to squat didn't take long. But, you still have squat. I can truly say I've been blessed during my career. Lots of time and effort put into it. Fortunately it has never really been work.

                    Here’s my story.

In my early 20’s I worked for a beer company and thought I was making pretty good money.

I left there and went to work for a grocery delivery company and almost doubled what I was making at the beer company overnight.

Fast forward 15 years with the grocery company and I have changed positions a few times, took a pay cut in there and now I’m pretty much double what I started at 15 years ago.

I also married a girl who has climbed the ladder at her company and makes well over double from what she started at.

Neither of us have a college degree, we have just worked out butts off to get to a very comfortable financial position.

The first 'real' job I had was working as an electrical apprentice and I was making about 15 an hour. Lived at home, rode to work with my dad. My bills were a pager and a truck note

Really wanted to be a game warden but college was whippin my ace cause Ive never been able to focus on school. Decided to leave a 7a-4p with weekends off and a solid chance at eventually getting a houston master electrician license to make 14.89 hr working 2p-10p with tues/weds off.

Took me about 12 years to double my salary and Id have to just about run for office to double what I make now. Maybe I need to ask about getting some stuff deleted?

Lots of wisdom here. But I’ll add it’s not just big companies that do it. Smaller companies pigeon hole employees as well. As a person increases their skills they often have to leave to get paid what they are worth unfortunately. Company ABC thinks giving them a 10% raise is awesome, when in fact they should be thinking what is this person worth and what’s it going to take to replace him if he walks out the door. It’s unfortunate for both sides. When mentoring people this is always part of my discussion with them.

Started a little over 9 years ago and haven't quite doubled it. When I first started we were a small firm and the pay was a little less than the big boys, but the work environment was much better. Making less money was well worth not having to deal with the big company BS. Nowadays we're trying to play the big corporation game but still want to pay like we're that little family company. And they wonder why people are leaving and we can't higher new grads...

Same here, crazy to reflect back on how little we was getting. Even when you factor in BAS/BAH and COLA

OP - Since then I have double my salary a couple of time since getting out of the military 17 years ago. One should be able to double at least once in 5-10 year time frame I would think.
