$30 a bale to cut someone else’s stuff that they paid for the fertilize on is a winning proposition all day every day to me, even with diesel being double.

I could make good money at that rate.

I put up 700 bales this week over at deer camp. $21,000 would put a BUNCH of cash in my pocket for sitting on the tractor for a few days.

Is the drought driving the cost of labor up? Clearly it gets hay crazy high (drought up here right now, too) but they cutting at $30 just seems high to me. I know people have a lot more money down there and maybe it’s hobby farmers that can afford to pay that.

Let’s say you get 3 cuttings. 63k doesn’t go far when you factor in tractors , fuel , string , repairs and time. I know a handful of guys who custom bale and all do it on the side because they can’t live off the profit.

I dont have time to custom much. But I’ve been getting $35 (5x6) for a few years $38 this year.

Go get $1M in equipment and parts! And more parts! And insurance and $80k trucks that need … parts. And labor… that ain’t there at any price

End of the season most will work themselves to death, make payments if they are lucky and pocket around minimum wage

$33-$35 for (4x5) with 2 bale per acre minimum is a steal of a deal

I think you are missing some costs in your calculations. Like Low Fence said - fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance, travel time, trucks, material purchases, labor, and equipment purchases

I sold 170 bales last weekend for $45 per. Had to take them about 8 miles so probably could have charged a hair more, but still made decent on them.
