    Keep algae out tote?

We have a 325 Gallon tote to collect rain water at our hunting property. We dont use it to drink mostly for showering and washing dishes. Everytime it fills up it starts to grow alge in it and becomes very dark and nasty. Whats the best way to keep this water Clean-ish?

Put some pieces of copper and/or silver in the tank.

If it is a chemical tote, paint it black.

And 1/2 cup of bleach every time you go there.

Paint black. Put a cup of bleach or 1/3 pool chorine tablet. That tote is larger than most. I have 275 gallon totes and put 1/2 cup of bleach.

This is exactly what we do. Ours is a 325 also.

We had 3 of the 275 gallon white totes and they were wrapped tight in foil backed insulation but grew some algae. I cleaned them out real good with bleach and refilled adding bleach to them, it helped but didn't stop it.

We replaced those three tanks with an 1100 gallon black tank from Tractor Supply and haven't had an issue since. we do add bleach every now and then but it has been about 4 years or so.

3ppm of bleach or chlorine will work. If it's a clear or opaque tote, sunlight will eventually kill the chlorine, just like in a pool.

Like others have said, sunlight is the culprit. Any way you can keep sunlight from penetrating will work. Painting is ok, but will eventually flake off. Amazon has some black fabric covers for those totes but they are not very thick (I’ve got some on 2 totes now and am not very hopeful of them lasting long. I may just build a tin box over ours with a small lid with a hinge for filling.

A pinch of coper sulfate will do the trick.

I used to use this stuff and keep the tote covered with a tarp. Never had an issue and the water always smelled fresh.
