Pizza Hut Delivery...Delivery charge - should we tip?

These days when you order a Pizza for delivery from "Pizza Hut" they add a $2.50 charge for delivery....I normally tip $3.00, but on top of the delivery charge it seems a little much.....

It turns a $10.00 pizza into an $18.00 purchase....what do ya'll think?

I am still going to tip my normal $3.00 but wanted to see what ya'll think.....

Well for starters, $10 + $2.50 +$3.00 is $15.50 and not $18.00 but I would call and ask if the driver is getting the delivery fee or is the company keeping it?

When did they start doing adding a delivery charge? Have all the pizza delivery chains implemented this charge? Is this additional charge going to the delivery driver or the company?

I guess it bound to happen so order a larger size to get your moneys worth.

The total from Pizza Hut was $14.47 we are actually giving the guy $18 so he gets a $3.53 tip......

All this for a pizza that cost $10.00

I still give them a couple of extra bucks. Beats getting off my butt and driving to the pizza place for carry-out.

From what I understand the delivery charge goes to the pizza place. It's their way of offsetting the cost of fuel, mileage and labor for the employee. If I remember correctly, my neighbors kid gets an hour wage UNDER minimum, mileage and then works for tips to make up most of his pay. He supplies the vehicle and fuel.

Look at it is as a convenience fee. Is it worth a whoppin' $2.50 for you to sit on you couch and let somebody bring it to you. Hail its worth $5.50 to have them do that for me. Have you ever walked into a PapaJohns or Pizza Hut delivery place on a busy night......

Plus think of all the beer, football or poptarts you miss out on while waiting...

It seems like everyone is adding either a fuel delivery charge or a fuel service tax to just about everything. Alarm companies, waste service, utility companies, and even UPS. This is something that was allowed by EPA and from what I understand is not regulated.

but by the time you add your tax it's about $16.75 and you want me to tip on top of that? I worked as a waiter for years and believe in tipping, but I worked for $2.13 per hour which is just about enough to cover taxes so on payday most of the time my check would say VOID. Now, I was a full service waiter that had to wait on people's every need, so when I go to a buffet or sonic or something like that I dont usually tip very much at all. I also worked a few fast food places and not once did I ever get a tip and I didnt do anything different that what a carhop at sonic does, but they expect a tip. JMO

Many many many years ago I delivered and the $1 we charged for delivery fee was given to the driver! To make sure they got something to at least cover tip! Gas price is up 4x since then... What's it worth to you???? Not to have to leave the house... But I'm sure they do get the delivery charge!

The tip is a payment for service.....if they paid their employees like you suggest, the company would just raise prices to offset that cost.

This way they ensure or try to ensure that their waitstaff or delivery staff provides you with good service and lets you make the call on how much to pay. This way they are working for you. The alternative is a company could stick you for $3-5-7-10 more across the board hidden in your bill depending or where you ate.

I prefer this because good people get good tips....bad people don't...of course this system lets cheapskates/"picheekatas" slide.....

on edit, I'm sure you knew this above..... I just did some bar and waitstaff work many years ago as a college student and hate to see good hard working people get stiffed by a company and customer.....

I used to work for Pizza Hut in college as a delivery driver. The delivery charge was not 2.50 then. The way it worked back then (10) years ago was the charge was split between the driver (for mileage etc.) and the company. Tips are really where the Drivers can make a pretty good wage doing it. Most of the time the driver is the one who takes the hit if the cooks screwed up or if a ticket got lost and the pizza was late. Best tip i ever got was 25.00.
