I never did the cane pole thing myself, or with kids, I just can’t imagine anything like watching him crank on fish with his little zebco….especially when perch fishing and he hooked a 2lb bass.

The academy brand has some little crank baits that look like grasshoppers and bait fish. We fish a couple on our place and I keep a simple tackle box in camp with smaller spinners and cranks

This. Except the price on the beetle spins has tripled.

One thing about farm ponds is you never know what might come out of them. Perch tackle is usually fine, but somebody could end up with a good sized bass too.

Yeah I can’t think of a more boring way to introduce a kid to fishing. “Here, sit still and watch this bobber.” Cast it out for them, until they are old enough to cast themselves and let them reel in a beetle spin or roadrunner. Keeps them occupied and they should be able to catch anything in a pond

I can’t say in all my years of fishing farm ponds ever waiting long for a fish to bite live bait. Most of them are overrun with bluegill and other similar species and a bobber rarely sits still.

There’s nothing more boring to me that throwing an artificial and reeling it back in……over and over.
