SSN found on dark web and what to do now.

I just received an alert from my credit card co saying they have found my SSN on the dark web. What should I do? I know I should put a freeze on credit reports and probably get a copy prior to make sure there is no fraudulent activity. One source says to contact the SSA and IRS. Is that really necessary? Any advice on this is very much appreciated.

I'm not sure how to protect yourself except to first make sure it is your credit card company that's notifying you. I would call them to verify. There's a lot of scams like this out there.

More than likely a scam nothing to worry about.

Sounds like a scam and they are trying to get your info.

I’d call your credit card company from their customer service # (not anything the email/text provided you) and verify if you want to double check though.

What’s your social security number? I can check for you.

                    How were you notified

What info did they ask for and share with you?

What kind of info did you confirm or share with them?

Better give it to both of us. Also your date of birth and your mother’s maiden name. We need to be sure.

This would be a lot funnier if you didn't have my SS#, DOB, and every other pertinent piece of personal and financial information that I have. Oh well, you won't spend anymore than Jennie does.

Funny how times change. When I was in college at A&M, and had a checking account at the local bank, my checks had the following printed on them: Name, address, drivers license number, SSN, and A&M student ID number. I think my student ID might have even had my SSN printed on it.

Yup, that’s how test grades were posted. My drivers license number was my SS#.
