Loco Coyote in GlenRose has always been high on my list.

Not sure how you guys grade.... I like a little breading to meat ratio. Tender, non gristle meat and real gravy on the side so the batter still has a crunch.

Mary's is on my list probably because I've been eating there since high school and real gravy.

New York Hill has that fake gravy you get at Chicken Express.

I'd give Old Jodys a nod as well in Temple. CFS is a little thin but real gravy.

I am 70 and remember the original Mrs. Goodsons in Huffsmith.
In a converted frame house. On a side road in the middle of nowhere, Just off of a road that used to be called Huffsmith-Kohrville Rd. I think it is now FM 2978. Dad worked the oil wells around Tomball and went often, took me several times. When we went Mrs Goodson stayed in the back cooking was rarely seen, she had a lady that waited tables and took orders in front. Dad knew Mrs Goodson and took me in the back to meet her. She was heating up a big deep skillet to fry some up. She showed me how she knew the grease was just right. She threw a wooden kitchen match in the grease, She said when the grease was hot enough the match would light. Just like she said, in a couple of minutes the match lit and she dropped in the steaks
She then skeedaddled us out of there as she was getting busy cooking.

I think this is maybe 2-3 miles from where it is now. It was just Tomball to me but you are correct. great place.

Lot's of people say Mary's cafe in Strawn is the best, and it's good, but I actually think that the one at New York Hill in Thurber 5 minutes east on I-20 is better. I'll have to think about "the best CFS", they are one of my favorite meals. There are lots of really good ones in Texas. In my travels all over the country, I've never found a really good Chicken Fried Steak outside of Texas.

Green Chili Willys in Amarillo on 27 toward Canyon is pretty good with Jalapeno gravy.
Cookie's in Teague is usually good with more meat than breading.

if y'all are in the area you should try Murn's in Archer City. it's mighty fine and big
and I agree New York Hill beats Mary's and I've been saying that for years

I agreed, until I ate one in claresholm Alberta at Roys Diner. It’s better than many in texas and makes my top 5.

Surprised no votes yet for Babe’s Chicken Dinner house in DFW or Smokestack Restaurant in Mingus/Thurber. That said, it may be both their gravies that put them at the top for me.

Goodsons Cafe in Tomball. Have not been in a longtime but cant imagine it being bad

It’s good but not as good as it used to be.

I like hickory hollow in Houston but may be just being amazed by the size of it as a kid. Haven’t eaten there in probably 3 years
