Gas side by side will run circles around a diesel side by side. When you have hills and mud there is no comparison.

So much so that I sold it and bought a Polaris Ranger Crew (gas) before our following year's trip with the Morris/Tompkins families.
This is almost exactly my experience with kubotas in the mountains and I’ve never driven a diesel vehicle other than a tractor that was better than a comparable gas vehicle in the mud. I’m a diesel truck driver for most of my life but not a fan of diesel utv’s.

I love the 78 cj5 compared to all the sxs’s. Was a fraction of the cost, goes where I want and does everything I need.

I’ve got a diesel John Deere with a cab and love it, goes 32 mph which is fast enough for me and probably 30 miles to the gallon. I don’t mud or ride trails though quit doing that when I was 21. It’s super reliable compared to a gas SXS.

I have a couple of diesel side by sides. I use them for work duty and hauling stuff. All my other equipment is diesel so I don't have to have two fuel tanks. They are great machines and pretty much bullet proof. But I don't play in the mud with them. If you want it for a play toy go gas.

This. Diesel is great if you got a bunch of other equipment that ALSO uses diesel. A convenience factor.

Otherwise, gasoline is the way to go.
