    Side-by-Sides: Gas Vs Diesel

Any big pros or cons between gas and diesel?

    #2
For hunting or general purpose use?

Every diesel I have seen used in East Tx and La. used for hunting had a hard time in the mud.

I had a diesel Kawasaki Mule circa 2010. It worked great for all around the house, ranch, lease, etc. Then I took it to the mountains in Colorado to run some trails, and it REALLY labored going uphill in high altitude. So much so that I sold it and bought a Polaris Ranger Crew (gas) before our following year's trip with the Morris/Tompkins families.

I think I've been in just about every type of SxS there is, gas and diesel. You couldn't give me a diesel machine, no matter the make.

I ride project sites with superintendents and the sxs is always a good Segway into hunting talk if they do it. That said, I always ask how they like the machine, and they all hate the diesels. They’re heavy and underpowered, especially once they leave the pavement. I’m a Mule Pro fan.

I have a tracker in the classified, go anywhere any side-by-side will go and go anywhere a jeep won’t go.

You want a 15k SxS for driving around the neighborhood? Man I’m in the wrong business.

My lease partner has had a diesel Ranger Crew this season. That thing is a ****. No throttle response, slow, gets stuck easily, and loud, but rides smoothly. The same can be said about a diesel Kubota that my brother had. Couldn’t give me a diesel. I have a ‘22 Mule Pro FXT and it is the perfect combination between a work horse that still has a little pep, IMO.

Guess ill be the odd man out here in saying I have a diesel polaris ranger crew, my family has a diesel kawasaki mule, and I love both. No problems from me on performance from either machine. They are both plenty fast for my needs (30ish mpg on polaris and 18ish mph on kawasaki) and I dont go mudding or trail riding. Just use around our place and the families ranch for deer hunting chores. As for the noise comment, neither are louder than any gas ranger ive ever been on. I might even argue that they are quieter.

Go electric for the neighborhood. I have a diesel but it's strength is pulling large downed trees and heavy loads in low gear.

I had a kubota, it would get stuck on a cow patty. I’m sure it would have lasted forever but you’ll have to ask the guy that bought it.

You might need a golf cart for the neighborhood

My 2cents, if you are going to use them regularly a gas engine works well. If they are going to sit for periods of time, I have found the diesel motor is better. You want speed get a gas, you want a smooth ride get a diesel. I have had 3 gas side by sides and they worked great but after a while I ended up selling all three after they starting costing more to keep running than I wanted to pay. My two current diesel side by sides have not had an issue since I bought them 6 years ago. They are not very fast but neither am I.
