I have played em all as well and I like the one hole in a sand pit. To me it is the most challenging.

Started with a hole in the ground, too. Still play that way at the camp sometimes.

The "official" boards are 2x2 with a 3-inch hole in the middle and covered with turf. The back is 2.5" high with the front 0 to .5" off the ground. The washer is a 2.5" washer. The boards are placed 21' center to center of the holes. You must stand beside the board, not on it. The scoring is 5(ringer)-3(leaner)-1(closest). The leaner is up for debate among some (2 or 3), but most go with 3. Some call it a leaner if any part of the washer is over the edge of the hole. Others require you to be able to see through the center of the washer into the hole. A washer must stay on the board to count. Whoever scores, takes the first turn pitching.
These are the rules that we used at the HLS&R Go Texan competition. With the large number of counties participating it seems that it is probably the most "universal" set of rules.
The boards evolved from the PVC pipe dug down into the ground. They (the boards) allowed the slide or bounce, but if you use the PVC in the ground you can slide the first few in until the hole gets dug out in front.

we play at Garner State Park every year. We take 2, 3 1/2" PVC couplers and put them in the gound 21 ft. apart. Paint 3 washers red and 3 blue. Play for two weeks solid. Have a blast. When I was younger we use to put two tomato cans in the ground. You can get the big washers at the hardware store.
