I like a 10x36 or 42. I don't like lugging around a big pair of binos when hunting. Nikon, Leupold, Steiner, Vortex all have binos in those sizes and in your price range.

I have Leupold Wind River Olympic 10x50 and they blow away every pair of Nikon and Bushnell binos I've tried. Not much different than my dad's Zeiss, I can't tell for the money.

I like 10 powers for stand hunting, but they are too hard for me to hold steady when I am stalking or moving. 8 powers are just about about perfect...sometimes you just want that little extra. I use Leica 10X42 Ultravids bought off of samplelist. I love them, but when you jump a buck and want get him in the glass quickly before he disappears in the brush, it is hard to get him in the field of view with the 10 powers.

The best optic info on the web is on the bird watching sites, those guys are picky about their glass. In your price range I would reccomend Pentax DCF 8 powers.
