So my outside unit is making an odd humming noise but the fan isn’t coming on. Crawled up into the attic and the furnace is still running. So should I let it keep doing what it’s doing or switch it to emergency heat which I have no idea what that means lol. Any help is appreciated.

It is defrosting. Fan will not run it is in ac mode with no fan to heat up coil outside to thaw it out

Emergency heat heats your home by bypassing the heat pump and using an electrical heat strip. This will also consume a lot more energy so use accordingly
