    Ceptic or Cespool help

I have a older house that was built in the 60s down on the coast an my shower has started to drain slowly. In the backyard there's a concrete tank that rises above ground with a lid on it. It's close to overflowing. Is this a cespool? There's no standing water in backyard but the grass an fruit trees grow amazingly back there. I've never pumped it out since I owned it I'm sure its past due.

If it was built in the sixties it’s definitely a septic tank. Your field lines may be stopped up with roots or they could be collapsed. You need someone that’s knowledgeable in that area to take a look at it.

I dont know anything about ceptic systems. If it's a ceptic tank where does the tank drain?

It flows out thru the field lines which are perforated and allow the water to soak into the ground.

Any signs of a pump? Older ones I've had didn't have a pump. Just a tank and field lines. My current septic system has multiple tanks and a set of field lines. It has a low pressure pump that pushes the water out thru the field lines. When the pump dies it all backs up.

But like was said, it is very possible that your field lines are plugged up with roots or collapsed. I have been told that if I have issues to do all I can to repair my system because if they replace it I'd have to go to an aerobic system and I gather it is more of a pain or maybe more costly. I don't know. I am no septic system expert. I have just been told repeatedly that if I start having problems to fix it and don't replace it.

I'd say you should have your tanks pumped out first and see what it looks like.

Definitely pump out the tank. You may be able to limp along if it's just a weekend home. It does sound like the field has failed.

Stupid by question but have you checked for hair clog in the drain? Do all other drains work ok? Is there any standing water around the tank?

It's a small once a month fishing cabin. The sinks jus drain in the yard. The toilet works fine. But water level of tank stays close to the top. No standing water anywhere. Considering a tankless propane portable shower in the barn an be done with it.

Ceptic tanks don't drain down any further that the lateral/field lines. Probably see the outlet head if you open the tank and look inside. Will also see the drain pipe from the house, it will have a 90 or 45 degree pointing down. Don't fall in.

Is the shower the only thing backing up?? Toilets flushing? Sinks draining?

Yes shower slow to drain. My toilet kept running the other day an the septic tank overflowed but I fixed that problem.

Problem seems to be in shower drain. Probably hair and soap scum buildup. Go get a drain cleaning stick from hardware store. Or a snake. Or commercial drain cleaner over night, flush with hot water in morning

If it was septic, all drains would be backing up.
