    2021 F150 5.0 Cylinder Deactivation

Was considering buying a new F150 with the 5.0. This engine has been around for years and is well proven. However, Ford with encouragement from the government has decided to use a cylinder deactivation program for 2021 which causes the engine to run on four cylinders when it is lightly loaded. Would like to get some input from the guys that wrench these things on a daily basis. Is this something to avoid especially since this is the first year? Also, for the GM vehicles there is a programmer that plugs into the OBD port that disables this function. Is this available for the Fords?

I’d go ecoboost if I were you. It’s been proven for quite awhile and it performs better than the v8. Don’t be afraid of the new technology.

I've got the '18 5.0L and love it...only thing that annoys me is it uses the "Start Stop" technology...but it has a button to over ride it....I override that 90% of the time...they do sell a harness to plug in to permanently override but I'm too cheap...100$ for that harness

I thought Chevy did the same several years ago and had trouble with their motors craping out because it was the same four cylinders going off every time? I think they fixed it some what by the onboard computer randomly selecting which four cylinders go off now.

Chevy had alot more issues with deactivation then running the same 4, same as ram hemi. You run into lifter issues, which will eat away at the cam.

I would never buy the first model or generation of anything as major a change as cylinder deactivation.

Happened to me with an ‘08 1/2 ton and my wife’s ‘13 Yukon.
Probably wouldn’t be an issue I would have known about the plug in override. There’s no way I’d take that chance again.

Didn't the Hemi have trouble with this. It's been in their lineup for a long time I think. I would opt for the 3.5 eb. Love mine.

Loved my 5.0 but no way I would go for that or the ecoboost, I want nothing with turbos. I would go to the dark side of Toyota first

Love the 5.0. Had 3 and never an issue BUT i don't think i'd buy in first round of what you're talking about.

My 2014 corvette had that and I installed a range technology module and deactivated it.

I have heard that simply plugging a connector into the 7-pin plug will deactivate the Start Stop by tricking the truck into thinking it's towing something. I was planning to grab a $6 plug off Amazon and see if that works.

The 5.0 is a great motor. I would not own a eco boost. Ive had a few ford Tech's say the same thing to me. I'm sure there is or will be a tuner to shut that off.
