If it is handcorn, I wouldnt worry about pens unless you have a ton of hogs. I do have hogs on my handcorn but only at night. So I refresh it in the am.

When you split the panel, do you put the spike side up or down when you build the pen? I could see it discouraging some jumpers. Just speculating

Well, my feeder cast a bit more than 8'. Just not for me. I like to have a good throwing corn feeder and and food protein that I can back my truck in between. I also like see multiple deer in the pen.

The hogs are terrible. I’ve been spreading 100 pounds over a 30x30 yard area and you can’t find a Kernal after about 12 hours

I built 2 feed pens as mentioned in this thread....cut cattle panels in half then even went back and made them 10 inches taller. I had a TC on both and ended up with thousands of pics of hogs in San Jac county. It pushed my deer into other areas of the 1700 acres. The hogs also took over the feeders but they seemed to be more hit or miss at the feeders. But the pens....they would dominate them and eat every piece. I had zero pics of deer at either one.

With that said, some make the short pens and kill giants in them. I was hoping that would be my case. But my hogs can leap them easily. Dumb *******s....they wore me out this year. I killed several with bow and rifle.

Last pic is of a buck that was killed at a feeder by a rifle hunter....I drove myself crazy bowhunting this buck. He showed at the feeder every 3 or 4 days...no pen at this one. Click image for larger version

And I was dumping 200 lbs in mine once a week. Maybe it was too much and became a chinese buffet to them.

Was the ground uneven where you built the pen? Or maybe a high spot that gave them an advantage? That’s wild.

I'd say uneven...I compensated and adjusted the panels I added to make it taller on the lower sides. But these pics are actually the higher side of the pen. I just couldn't keep them out once they knew they could easily clear a 25 inch panel. These were only 2 panels around, had they been 4 panels around it may have helped.

I think when the hogs can be so close to a food source at a small pen, they will get in to it. If you do the short pens, add the strand of barb wire around the top.

When I cut them i run the spikes down.
I have had pigs jump it but only a few and adding the barb wire strand helps.. even two strands.
Pens don’t need to be round. That only applies to hog traps. They won’t bust into a square pen only out of one.

If you can, I prefer 4 of the 36” tall hog panels for a 16’x16’ pen, but it cost nearly twice as much as the cattle panels

This is a 32x32 but it’s really only necessary for a feeder and runs about $200.

Right. OP was talking about hand corn pens though

I asked the same question last year and I took Garguy and antlers86 advice and build a 16 foot diameter pen. Worked perfect!
