Not all the time. I paid off my BIL’s owed child support of $10K to keep him out of jail since he had just landed a good job where he could get back on his feet. He hasn’t missed a payment yet in the last year and a half and we have another year or so to go and he’ll be paid up.

It was a leap of faith and a decision my wife (his sister) and I talked about and to see him today and where he is, it makes my heart feel good.

I will say though, this has been the exception!!!
