I use Tink's smoke sticks - All Season scent. They work great, especially if you're in a pop-up or Krivoman type blind. I was in my Krivo the other day with the 2 middle windows open, smoke stick burning inside the blind underneath the open windows. Wind was blowing from blind to the feeder (terrible). Had whitetail does with fawns from 3 yards to 40 yards all morning. Never had one even get nervous.
It's better than just smoking your clothes. You'll get smoked inside the blind. It's not terrible, but you're gonna smell like smoke when you're done hunting. Having it burning the whole time you're sitting really covers your scent, and the smoke doesn't spook the deer at all. Seems to work just as well as ozone for me.
Thanks for that testimonial, Shane. I have been having a VERY difficult time this season due to (probably) bad placement of my set up - I am in a lower area and hedged in on sides by tree lines. I think that regardless of 'scent-free' precautions and wind direction the wind swirls and I've been alerting does all season. The 1 and 2 year old bucks don't seem to mind, though.
I'll definitely try to smoke sticks.
So is everyone using the skunk scent from tinks and diluting it or what? Are you using a drag as you walkin with a wafer on it or what? Thank
Yes, I use Tink's at present. There are any number of ways to use it. I currently use the lil orange tink scent bottles that have cotton in them. A few drops of skunk and you're good to go.
However, I've used unscented tampons many, many times. (Yes.....awkward to purchase.... 😉 ) I tie the tampon string to a 2' length of green decoy cord to the tampon and then tie a clothes pin to the other end. I use 35mm film canisters to store it when not in use. Simply clip the clothes pin to a limb etc and let it unroll then pop open the canister. When you're finished simply back in the canister, capped, rolled up and into a freezer bag. You'll need a couple of freezer bags, I use 3, one inside another, to completely stamp out the smell.
As for scent from walking in, I've worn insulated boots that the bottom 1/3 is made of rubber. I make it a point to walk in mud/h20, cow crap, over cedar boughs, or whatever is natural to the area. I always spray down liberally with scent killer. I also don't wear/store them anywhere that I think they'll get contaminated and both myself and my hunting clothes are clean. I quite often hunt logging roads, grown up pipelines, etc and simply can't think of the last time my backtrail was detected.
