Thats basically the shop I run now for the State of Colorado plus we do metal fab. We just dont have the time or the experienced inmates to dig too far into them as we let them do the work under our supervision. We do oil/filter/fluids, brakes, tires, ball joints, struts, minor mechanic stuff, etc. There isnt alot of money in changing oil. Its the upsale of other worn components when you are under there or doing a tire rotate that make it worth while. Have a friend up here in Colorado that runs that exact same shop for the public plus an alignment rack that stays swamped and keeps himself plus 3 guys busy. I think something like this plus having the ability to do some fab work, welding, etc would do well. This is the same work I have been doing all my life and kinda enjoy it. I have no desire to get into diagnostics or the higher end new stuff but unfortunately everything is headed that way. They all still need tires and brakes and minor mechanical things though. Pretty sure there is NO ONE that works on small engines or chainsaws / weedeaters around or ATV's for that matter. I have always excelled at my jobs because I have the "yeah I can fix that" attitude....from golf carts to chainsaws to an 18 wheeler.

Start a GC business. Line yourself up with a bunch of subs and sell remodel/small construction type jobs. Siding, roofs, home additions, bath and kitchen remodels. People are always searching for that kind of stuff.

can make decent living doing painting/staining work and it doesnt cost much to get started and profit margins are pretty good, i had pennies saved when i was laid off, get in with few businesses that gc work, realtors, other trades and network. can stay pretty busy fairly easy. least busy as most want to be.

Seems there is lots of this type of work if you are skilled, treat customers right and willing to bust your butt. Getting jobs done when you say you will, show up when you say you will and charge a fair price you should do OK. Word of mouth will be your best salesman if your work is good.

This. My neighbor started building metal buildings on his own a couple years ago and had built a heck of a business. Huge need for it if you are honest and do quality work.

Mobil home moving and set up. $4,000-8,000 a move and can stay busier than you want. You need a couple of hands, a CDL, and a truck to move it. Use your landscaping skills to do the pad work, sub out or do yourself concrete runners, if it needs a tongue welded on there you go, you know how to do that. You'd be a 1 stop shop. Find you an electrician and plumber to sub to and do the septic yourself.

                        First and only question is...

What are you passionate about and want to do on a daily basis?

Hope the OP has been successful. Since this thread I have met several people who have been laid off and or quit their jobs and started companies. Metal work, Leather, Photography, Landscaping, mulching, Hot Shot, General Contractor, Mobil car detailing. Most are doing very well for themselves.

Too bad he left TBH, I was looking forward to seeing what he ended up doing, and if he was successful.
