Also for short stories before bed, nothing better than the Pat McManus books. Perfect for youngsters, and funny. I have all of his books and they are pretty worn out.

I’ll second this. I read these to my son when he was about that age. We both laughed until we cried sometimes. Not the classics, but extremely entertaining
