    Ticks and pigs???

Ok, this came up on a hunt the other day, we harvested a small pig and took it quickly home to clean it. As we hung it up we noticed that it was infested with far more ticks than usual. So here is the question....

    1. Will high amounts of parasites like ticks effect the meat in any way.

    2. Can you spray the pig with some sort of flea/tick spray before cleaning it without effecting the meat?

Eatable meat, parasites, pigs and exs could be a fun subject on this thread.

Sorry for the cat herding, but I need to branch off some of these points

The little pig I killed was covered in lice. I didn't see any ticks.

We always pressure wash them before cleaning. Knocks the stinch and the bugs off.

Well, let me tell you, ticks and hogs just seem to go together in the warmer months. One time I cleaned a hog that was infested with them nasty boogers, when I got home from the hunt three days later I thought I had found them all.

Well, I found out later when I started hurting that I didn't get them all, they will find your berries and attach right to them suckers! OUCH!

The thing is if we take them home to clean them, I would rather those parasites not fall off in the yard and get on my dogs, or my "berries"...

Any way to get rid of the parasites before you leave the field without skinning the animal?

Why not skin it right there in the field and drop it in the cooler?

That is what I do. We use the pickup lights, I carry a rope and piece of bent rebar and then I string them up and skin them, then drop them in the cooler. The bad thing is the fleas and ticks get into your truck then when you get in to go home.

I really don't think there is anyway to get rid of all them suckers.

If you bring a cactus burner with you, you could singe off the hair and the little nasties.

I'm leary of dusting the hog with an insecticide and then cross contaminating the meat.

You could carry a bag of sulfur and dust the piggy... that'll run off the ticks and fleas...

I have been told that if you let the animal set dead for awhile, the ticks will release and disperse. Haven't seen it except once on a deer. Noticed that after he laid there a little, a couple of ticks were starting to crawl around.

We carry tick spoons with us, but I agree with Traildust too.
