I remember in high school we had one that was a nuisance. One day I decided that me and the dog, and an aluminum baseball bat were going to send him on his way. I beat that sucker in the head with the bat till my arms were numb... then he ran up a tree lol. One hit with a shovel not likely to really phase a possum. You'll have to let us know if it was "really" dead the next morning or not. They remind me of coons. When I pop a racoon in the head with a 22 in a box trap they then try to tear the trap apart.
