I've had a GSP for 9 years, perfect family dog and very loyal. Mine is a bit of a "velcro" dog but she won't venture too far. Natural instinct to point, pointing at 10 weeks old. They are a bit hyper in the younger years but I didn't find the energy to be out of hand. The breeder told me, "she will be a great house dog and with some work, she will be a good hunting dog".

We were looking at GSP for the last couple of years and finally settled in with a Braque Francais. They are like GSP but seem to have an off switch when not hunting. To us, it's the best of both worlds. Our pup spends 12 months out of the year as a house dog and 20-25 days as a bird dog.

Look them up as another option. All the breeders spoke with had the same story. They were GSP people and when they had kids, they looked for a calm GSP and found the Braque francais breed.

They are funny dogs with a lot of drive. I rescued mine when he was 7 or 8 years old, and while I've never tried to hunt with him, he's a fun dog to have around the house. Only thing about him (not sure if it is indicative of the breed) is that he's a counter surfer. Leave anything edible within reach, and it will be ate. lol

The good: on a par with a Goldens for sweetest disposition. The nicest dog I've ever had. Nothing seems to phase him, and I've never seen him mad or aggressive in any way - he's missing that gene. Very good nose - when he's on the case, he'll find it.

The bad: Do some looking on Classifieds and you'll see them coming up periodically " 9 month old GSP looking for a home". They're a whole lotta dog if you're trying to keep them in the suburbs. They either need to be out in the country, or a lot of time and attention. I'm not sure if they're all giant doofuses or just mine. He's a good boy, but I wouldn't say he's particularly smart.

I can't say firsthand, but guys that run them in thick brush say they don't have the stamina that labs do. Which makes sense, they aren't chonkers like labs, which was something I liked/like about them.

We have a GSP and she is about two years old now. She's been a great family dog and gets along well with my four kids and 12 year old beagle. Lots of energy, easy to train, and stays on your hip while running around the property. Loves to swim and retrieve.

Got her at Wing And A Prayer Shorthairs out in Katy.

My son has one up at school with him, in a small yard he does fine, but when he brings him home he runs for days, literally. He will run all **** day if we let him. As far as disposition he's very loving, good with cats, did I mention he likes to run?

He's great at pointing out butterflies and grasshoppers..

I’ve never had a dog that I loved more nor driven me as crazy as my GSP. He finally started slowing down at 11 years old. Unfortunately, mine didn’t have any bird drive so he was only used for retrieving and now a bed hog. GSPs tend to have separation anxiety if they aren’t exercised and stimulated enough. Funniest story I heard about one was it pulled a propane grill into the owner’s pool. Mine was also an escape artist. He could climb an 8ft chainlink fence faster than I could. He also figured out how to get my dad’s lab out of her harness.

TTUbudd has been around my dog when he was young and that’s probably a big reason he didn’t get a GSP.

I love the breed, but not sure if I’ll get another one when my current one crosses the rainbow bridge.

Personally, I think they are great dogs. My family has had a few of them, and I would probably get one if I had the time to train/exercise it. Go on FB and reading other peoples blurbs about their GSP, I see one common thing: they do not like to be left out or left alone for a long period of time. Ever tried to cook a meal with a large spotted dog lying on the cold tile floor in the kitchen? If you wear them out with exercise, they are great, just need to find the time to do so.

Absolutely love our GSP. She is an indoor/outdoor dog and like others have mentioned, has endless energy. She is also a great family dog, and has caused zero issues with my 2yr old daughter - unless you count being excited and knocking her over while she was learning to walk. While upland hunting I haven't found another breed that can keep up with her, and I have previously owned a couple of labradors. My only complaint is that her retrieving skills could improve, which I am working on, but also realize that she is a pointer.

They are a high energy dog, but so are a lot of dogs. Have seen great ones and seen some duds( like all breeds) do some research on breeder, see if you can meet parents.

We have a Weimaraner which is very similar, she is a fantastic dog and deals with kids all day.

As almost everyone else has said they are great dogs but not for everybody. If you don't have time to exercise your dog almost every day then you should probably get something else. They can be quite destructive when they get bored.
