    Approximate Cost to replace AC

Looking for estimate or guess as to the price to replace central AC in a 900 square foot cabin. The AC that is there blows fairly cold but seems like I can't keep the temp down in the house during the day. Last time I had it serviced they said that it uses the old refrigerant and I might be better off to replace. Looking for a ball park figure. Just outside of Franklin, Texas. Thanks.

Don’t know about the cost of central ac, but We just put a 10,000 btu window unit in our camphouse den and it cools half the house. It’s probably 900 to 1000 sq ft.

You could do a mini split for about 2500

$1000 to $1500 a ton if including ductwork. Replacement should be half that. It all depends on the scope of the work and the time of equipment you want.

This is a good option and you can add two head units to one compressor. And they are quiet.

Liking the idea of a mini-split. Is there anything I can do to boost the one I have? It's a rent house and from the looks of things the last renters didn't spend money on filters.

Make sure your A coil is clean, air filter is clean, and outside unit coils are open and clean.

You could try putting more insulation in the attic. Blown-in insulation is pretty cheap if you DIY. Also, check the ductwork for leaks.

Mini splits and rentals don’t mix well. I there is central air there now, probably best to go back with the same and renter-proof it. (1x/yr filter, thermostat with setting constraints, maintenance plan from reputable company).

You can do the mini-splits, but people tend to abuse them like they are window units, set them crazy cold, not clean filters, etc. If you go this route, definitely have them cleaned 1-2x per year.

                      He is not far off.
                      Unit cost $1200
                      Circuit $500
                      Install around a $1000.
This pending you can mount on an outside wall.

My neighbor just had one installed brand new for $1k flat.

The outdoor unit isn’t level, no line set cover, no disconnect, thermostat only reads in Celsius, zero warranty, and the dude that installed it wore flip flops and worked out of a ‘97 civic.

                          But hey, it was cheap!

A good quality unit installed correctly with warranty is typically going to be 3-5k per zone around these parts.

I recently added blown in insulation , average bill reduction is $40-45 a week. I added 12” , cost me about $1000 . I did purchase the insulation and paid someone $25/ hour to actually do the work. House before insulation lucky to cool to 80 during the heat of the day and unit ran nonstop day and night. Maintains 74 now all day and actually shuts off fairly regular. I keep meaning to see how often it is running every hour but I always forget .

Have you requested any bids? Pretty simple install and there are some affordable units on the market. What would you charge to install one?
