I’ve been wearing Red Wing steel toe work shoes everyday for over eight years. They hold up better than any other I’ve tried. Didn’t know they had anything custom.

I have a very wide foot 4-5E. I wear Red Wing squared toe work boots. I didn’t want the steel toes but had no choice. I’m happy with them.

All day everyday for the past 25 years. 2408s for the day job where I am on a cement floor. 2218s for after work and weekends while logging or sawmilling. I have a new pair of 2218s ordered but the plant shut down with the covid mess so who knows when they will get made. The only pair of boots that I've owned that were more comfortable was a custom made pair of "Nick's" Smokechasers that I had made way back when I was a wildland firefighter.

It is the only work boot I will buy. I have never done a special order.
For me the fastest way to break them in is to put them on and pour a cup of water in them. Walk/ work them dry. In this hot weather you may have to add water at lunch. Then that evening oil them heavy. They will fit like a glove afterwards but it is a miserable day.

I’ve worn Red Wing for over 25 years.
For the last 10 or so, I wear the 3505
I will only buy the USA made, and I need the electrical hazard rated, and really appreciate the puncture resistant soles.
Pay attention when shopping, not all of their boots are made in USA. I feel that they are of a much higher quality, the ones that are.
I wear a 4E width, and not many manufacturers offer that. I also have an extremely high arch, which means a high instep
I get the store to stretch them for me, sometimes takes a few days to a week. I replace the insoles with some that I like better (SOLE brand is my current favorite)
They take a few days to break in, but not more than a week or so. My newest pair, required a couple of follow up visits to the store for stretch. Just be patient, and do not suffer, let the store do the hard part.
I do not oil them. I use SnoSeal instead. It is beeswax based. The leather doesn’t soften and weaken with SnoSeal like it does with oil.
