You won’t see people who are experienced and know optics running anything less than a Vortex Razor on their rigs. The Razor line is very good. Anything below that and you will see the flaws IF you know what you are looking for.

From what I’ve seen, inexperienced shooter/hunters or people that don’t want to spend a lot of money on optics are the folks that think highly of Vortex.

One thing they did do was force some of the other optics companies (*cough* Nikon *cough* Bushnell *cough) to step up their warranties that sucked previously. Leupold always had a lifetime guarantee.

I'd take a Vortex over a Bushnell or even a Nikon.
But for the money Luepold is a better product scope wise.
Binoculars I think the quality is much closer in comparison.

Almost all my rifles wear Nikon glass, for a couple reasons. But Nikon is no longer in the scope business which is why I opened this thread. I’m not looking to add another scope but you never know. The only thing Vortex I’ve owned is the Venom reflex sight and I’m happy with it so far for what it is. I did however just buy another reflex sight and went with a Leupold Delta Point because the other on my G40 has been outstanding. This thread makes me think if I should need another scope it will be a Leupold.

Depends on the model scope. Be advised that not all “4x12” scopes are created equal. You get what you pay for. Do your research before buying and being disappointed in a lower quality, budget minded scope.

IIRC, Vortex Optics originally entered the glass market in 2002 creating binoculars for bird watchers. Arrowsmith can correct me if I’m wrong. They soon expanded to other optic products within the hunting industry. There was no way they could compete with Leupold (Made in the USA) when comparing the same features and quality of scopes; therefore Vortex chose to go the Chinese / Asian route. Most of their glass products are affordable, entry-level scopes for the budget minded. They also offer mid-tier glass made in Japan, and their premier higher end glass ($2000 - $3000) is Japanese made yet assembled in the US.

It’s been my experience that lower end, Chinese glass sucks at clarity, resolution, light gathering, and results in eye fatigue and headaches. I would advise against buying a rifle scope, regardless of brand based strictly on price. Compare all features and look through the glass before buying.

Here are the Vortex lines and where they are made:

China - Crossfire, Diamondback , Strike Eagle, Copperhead

          Philippines - Viper

Japan - Golden Eagle, nearly all Razor models

Razor HD AMG - Japanese glass, assembled in America

Do I own any Vortex glass ? Nope, I’m old school and have always purchased higher-end Leupold, Burris, Nikon, and/or German - Austrian optics.

I have several. Mostly Monarchs, and Buckmasters. I always looked at the Buckmaster as a really decent bang for the buck scope. Unfortunately can't buy em anymore. I gues Nikon isn't making scopes anymore.

I have two Vipers and they are decent and work for the rifles they’re on but they are not what I would call quality. Razor is lowest I would go on a quality gun.

                  All I run is Vortex.

I have Vipers and Diamondbacks on bolt actions and AR15/10s. Never had an issue with any of them and never sent any back for repair. All solid glass and do what I want them to do.

Have a few binos as well. Send those back just for cleaning after 3d and hunting season.

Love the warranty and for 8 years haven't had to use it for scope repair.

Are there better..sure. i drool when I look through my buddies Swaro.. but I am not dropping 2500 on a scope. Price point to value play a factor for me.

I run NF and Kahles as well as Razors and Gen II PSTs. I’ve got buddies that run Tangent Theta, NF, Kahles, Razors, and Premier, and they all run Gen II PSTs on some rigs as well. I’d argue these guys shoot far more than most, and they demand good equipment. They may not run them on their match rifles, but they’ll use them just the same for LR shooting. Right now one of them has been testing out the Strike Eagle 5-25 with EBR7C on a beater rifle, and I’ll say if it holds up it’s dang impressive. It’s fantastic glass for the money with a good reticle and solid turrets. I’m still not sure whether it’ll hold up or not though.

I do agree with your statement in general about them, but they are slowly bringing up the quality of their lower line optics.

Not a fan of Vortex, but I wouldn’t hesitate to put one on a Mini 14....it’s not like you’re gonna be trying to shoot one hole groups with it.

I am satisfied with my HS-T as a midpoint scope on a cheap rifle I won in a raffle. But it doesn't compare to the Night force SVT or the Night force NXS I just put on a Proof build. It's not a terrible scope by any means IMO, but you get what you pay for IMO.

I bought two when they first came out and then a couple years ago got two more on sale at cabelas hoping they had improved over the 10 years or so

Y’all are making me question my purchase last night. Got a 3.5x10x50 Diamondback, regular $250 and with discounts I had, it was about $180 and some change out the door.
