    Common Nighthawk ?

We found this critter last night on the ground, dead and covered in fireants. Ive never seen one in person and had to refer to my Central Texas Bird ID pamphlet. I see them flying over head in the evenings but thought them to be some kite or something else.

    Id like some confirmation please.

I searched for Nighthawk on TBH and found Brute Killer had posted something on the sound it makes...

Ill be keeping an ear out now too...upon confirmation.

I make a habit of not applying broad spectrum insecticides until population pressures and crop damage dictate otherwise. Id like to think it helps critters like these not ingest killer chemicals.

    God bless!

Yep. That’s a nighthawk. We always called them bull bats. My stepbrother made me call him nighthawk.

We hunted in Encinal for a few years and you need a helmet to ride around on anything without a windshield at night.

We call them whipper-whirls, guessing from the call or sound they make. I know the proper name for them is nighthawk though.

Better watch them bull bats, they'll sneak up on ya, and scare the bejeezers out of you, usually early mornings and late afternoons!

And you had to call him Dragon, didn't ya. He touched your drum set.

Whip-poor-wills make a different sound. A sound that sounds just like their name.
                    I think they’re different.

Sounds like a somewhat funny but painful or messy story. Do tell.

Download the Merlin bird Id app, it’s free and has all birds listed and easy to identify. It also has all the birds sounds associated with the pics.
