There are about seven birds in the family of Nightjars (AKA Bull Bats, AKA Goatsuckers). I haven't looked into how to tell them apart lately (I used to know them but have forgotten). Here are their names: Lesser nighthawk, Common nighthawk, Common pauraque, Common poorwill, Chuck-will's-widow, Eastern whip-poor-will & the Mexican whip-poor-will. Which one this is depends on your location, it's call (listen for them in the evenings) and patterns of feather colors.

There are a lot of them in the area, we were just in Seguin last night, the air was full of them in town. I guess there are a lot of flying bugs in the area. Then at work, there are quite a few, that are nesting on the ground right now. Not the brightest birds, they will nest on the ground, right in the middle of the drive and get run over. Last year one of a pair got run over, early one day, then later that day, the other one got run over, because it stayed on the ground right next to the bird that got run over. Most of the time, they lay eggs on the ground near buildings, doing so they are typically safe, except for fire ants and cats. They don't build nests, just lay eggs in the rocks, the eggs are very close to the same color as the rocks, the road base is made of. So if they are not sitting on the nest, it's easy to not see the eggs and step on them.
