Knew a guy that when he repainted his house, he painted over the dirt dauber nests. I asked him why, and he said it's free insulation and if I had ever seen one fall off on it's own.
Lazy, but made sense. Those things are stuck on good.

I am happy to see them every year.....

They are mud daubers, not dirt daubers. Beneficial in one sense but a PIA otherwise.

I've seen a ton of dirt dauber nests before but nothing like this. It's bigger than my head.

Usually they build inside the ends of my pipes and other small openings

and I've never seen them flying around this. Usually you seem them flying around where they are planting comatose bugs.

It does look a little different than the ones I've seen before.

The dirt daubers I've always had around were better craftsmen than that. Looks like somebody threw a mud pie on your wall.

Ask me what they can do to a carburetor.

We have 2 different types of mud/dirt daubers around here. Most are the size of a wasp and solid black. The others are smaller and black with an orange band around part of their abdomen. Usually they build in a hole, or make lines on the side of a wall. I've seen a few similar to your picture, but never much bigger than a golf ball. My oldest son and I have both been stung by the solid black ones. One got between my shoe and my ankle and stung when my shoe mashed him against my leg. My son caught one when he was little and squeezed it before it stung him. Try to pry one of those off and put it in something that bugs can't get out of and wait for them to come out of the nest.
