Whatever you do, use new pipe.
Don’t try to save money by using drill stem. It will cost you more in the long run and start rusting immediately.

New pipe is definitely better, but its so much more expensive. If you can find drill stem that is "Reject" pipe, it's the best of both worlds. It's pipe that was brought to drill sites, but never put in the ground for various reasons. Generally very clean (minimal rust), not magnetized, not radioactive. My local steel yard carries it all the time. Its half the cost of new pipe. Welds great.
