I remember the fisheries class I took at A&M many years ago. During one lab session we looked at several freshwater fish, mostly bass, under a magnifying glass. It was amazing the number of parasites they had crawling on them. Then after cutting them open, we found a bunch more. That was with fish that were pretty normal looking at first glance. That being said, I would have pitched the catfish in question here.

Are all of them caught out of that pond/lake the same way?

There's a reason ya' dunk 'em in corn meal before you fry 'em and eat 'em;......it's to cover up all of those flavor enhancers!

I was cleaning a white bass a few years ago and saw something similar, but it was about dime size. I threw that fish away.

You need to feed medicated wormer to your fish

I never eat fish from a still water pond. Always from a large lake or a pond that has a stream that feeds it and drains from it.

They said about half were this way. Don’t know how many they caught.

We've seen them on some of our farm ponds. They're harmless . Here's a good read on them:

Is that in the fillet? I wouldn't eat that either.

Used to canoe very small rivers and catch lots of fish before we drilled a kazillion wells and stopped many spring flows. In dry spells with stagnant water, the fish had way too much yuk and I became a catch and release finally. But these fish just seem to need some of that miracle acne meds I see on TV. Or my grandmother, bless her laid to rest soul, who would fix this promptly with her squeeze (get away woman) fingers.
