    DPMS 308 upper

Did anybody see the Outdoor channel coverage of the Shot show that was held last week in Florida. One segment they showed a DPMS upper with bolt that was in 308. They said it would convert any AR15 in 556/223 to 308. They said the price was TBD. Just wondering if these were available and what is the price?

That is true. You can chose from any number of different calibers that you want. The list is seemingly endless. Some slight mods may be necessary to the weapon and mags for proper feeding and extraction, but really nothing major. Prices will vary according to the brand. I personally recomend LMT and Armalite. Their websites should have tons of info on uppers that can be purchased. Oh, and you can't just change the bolt, it has to be the entire upper to compensate for the difference in projectile size. I figured you probably figured that one out though. What do you currently own?

Currently I have a S&W M&P ar15 in 556/223. I got it right after Big O was elected. Both my sons have 556/223 as well so that was what I got so we could have common ammo pool. But I would really like an ar15 in 308 for the added knock down power for hogs.

It's my understanding you will also need a 308 lower and mags to go along with that 308 upper

308 requires a different lower and stock from ar15 so it wont fit on the ar15 lower. just checked their site and shows nothing on a bolt action upper.

You shouldnt have any problem matching a new upper with your SW M&P. One thing to look for is if the barrel is chromed. This helps with consitent accuracy as well as longevity of the weapon. On a side note, you might want to look into the 7.62 x 39(AK 47 round) for a new upper. It has quite a bit more knock down power than the .223 and is TONS cheaper to buy than .308. Great for hunting and target shooting alike. The 308of course is a great round though. A couple more to look at might be the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8 SPC. Probably gonna run into difficulties finding ammo for those though as they are still up and coming calibers. Keep us posted on what you find and go with. I'll offer any help I can, and if I come across any good deals I'll let you know. I always running into people selling or trading AR stuff.

I stand corrected! The .308 is in fact too long to just change out the upper. However, the 7.62 x 39 will mate just fine with just changing the upper, bolt, and mags. Sorry bout the mistake there.

The upper they showed included a new bolt but it was not "bolt action". It looked like the 556/223 ar15 bolt but sized for 308.

Maybe I will just have to look for a 308 complete unit. Althought I'm sure I won't find one for any near the price I got the 556/223 for. Dang Dems

DPMS Has made a .308 caliber AR style rifle for a while now.
The Remington R-25 is actually a DPMS.

get ready to spend 1700-2500 for it. if you want one now, check out gunbroker.com for it. piecing one together like the 15 is going to cost more than a complete unit so not really worth it.

DMPS and Armalite is not interchangable in hardware either so when you decide on whichever one you want, youre sticking to that platform. DPMS has a better selection of calibers, so i would go with them.

I have killed a couple of deer with the Armalite in .308...pretty neat guns. This particular one that belonged to a buddy shot the 150 fusions really tight.

I'm gonna stick to a 5.56 for now only cuz I'm set up with a bunch of reloading components. Tested a load with the 75gr hornady over the chrony today and will shoot for groups some time next week if the wind ever settles below 40mph

LaRue has a wicked looking 7.62 set too

I likes me an AR-10... gonna be the next one I build/buy. I have all the stuff to reload for either the .308 or .223 and got a gillion brass for the .308... used to play with that a lot in my former life. Never liked the little pop gun .223, but not that I have them, they's sure fun to shoot. Agreed that the AR-10

If you ever wanna swap some of that .308 for some 5.56 brass, you just might talk me into getting an ar-10 too

I happen to know where a DPMS 308 rifle, brand new 24" bull barrel is for mid $1300 range.
