I’ve walked A LOT of roofs, and can’t remember at time I could not tell when I was or wasn’t standing on a rafter. Like Rob said, tap a nail in at the top and bottom and snap a chalk line. If you’re worried about the holes just pookie them, you’re putting a metal roof over them. The nails or screws you use to secure the 1x4’s are not going to be water proof unless you seal them.
