Impact of COVID-19 on the Texas Hunting Season this year....

This is meant to be a question, maybe a dumb one, but nonetheless. What sort of impact will the virus have on the economics and ability of those to hunt. With possible income challenges, along with the fear of how long and what that will end up looking like. Hunting for many is a luxury that is paid for with “hobby funds” for the most part. The vast majority don’t need to hunt to eat, and if they did I don’t know that paying a premium lease cost would be how that is accomplished. What will that look like? Will people decide to get off of their place due to lack of disposable income? I’m not talking impact of literal hunting but rather the logistics of what it all looks like....

I don’t really need a lease. Live in the country in Colorado County. My boys kill better deer than me. I
    Have a lease
In Gillespie County and it is
My happy place. So I’ll keep my lease and let the
    Boys
    Hunt at the
    House.

This thing is already bad and hitting a lot of people in the pocket book. Unfortunately, I think its going to get worse before it gets better.

So, yes, I think it will impact peoples ability to pay for a lease.

But it depends on so many factors. Might be a bit early yet.

To be honest I hunt for fun, I don’t need the meat. The meats a bonus though... I’m on a lease that ain’t expensive, we don’t feed protein or feed year round. I can imagine being a very expensive lease then yeah it would be tough paying it.

My property is in east TX. If the grocery stores can’t get meat, I’m gonna have to start spot lighting.

If these conditions continue for any length of time there will most defintely be an impact on things like hunting, fishing, etc. This will start to show up with more lease openings, more things for sale like guns, gently used boats, trucks, etc..

I expect to see the supply of lease openings rise. Not just from COVID19 but from the drop in oil prices and the ensuing regional job losses. Unfortunate.

Unfortunately, this is probably the truth of things to come.

It is already affecting the hunting industry and WT season will be no different.. Many many cancellations on booked hunts. There will be some great deals to be had if this lasts any length of time especially on ranches with huge feed bills.. Reducing head count will be important..

I live on a set income for the rest of my life. And that income includes all my hunting, so I will carry on as long as I'm alive and able.

There are five on my lease, three of us have jobs that are 100% safe and we will be fine. The other two are in the oil industry that is already being hit. They’re both smart dudes and i have no doubt that they’re prepared for this, but as a group we will do whatever it takes to keep our group together. I think there will be some good places coming open soon though!
