The boy and I are getting deep into waterfowling and been considered a good lab for that exact reason.

Do it! Start your research now, but also get him involved.

I assure you, the reward of watching a dog bring a bird back to him will be worth everything!

This. Have had several. Use to have one that would sit on my shoulder and watch tv. They done smell like ferrets do and love to take their own “baths”. Just clean their cage every so often and they are great. In fact the lack of smell makes me forget to clean cage as often as I should.

We've got a leopard gecko. He's pretty cool and low maintenance. Feeding time with crickets is awesome!

Before you go trying some of these other suggestions get a boa or a python. That way, when the others don’t work out you can just feed them to the snake. Don’t like cleaning the guinea pig’s cage every week, feed the snake. Ferret smell like a wet dog that rolled in a dead skunk? Feed the the snake. Kids let 100 crickets loose in the house instead of feeding the gecko? Feed the snake.

The most entertaining pet I've ever had was a female coon. My daughter found it after a bad wind storm. Still had its eyes closed. She bottle feed it back to life. It learned to use a litter box. It roamed the house freely. Had to dose her up with benydrl to get her to the vet for rabies shots. Of course, coons ain't for everyone.
My African Grey was a very good pet too. Some what messy.
Built a terrarium out of a 75 gallon tank with five lined skinks. Had a male and female. The female got to be 10" long. Had several batches of babies that the male would eat before we could get them out.
Did the map and red-eared slider turtles. Had 2 loggerheads and a couple of soft shells I netted in red river.
Made a pond eco-tank. Large mouth bass is entertaining. It would come completely out of the water to take food from my hand.
Nellie the pot bellied pig is a hoot!! Sposta have been a miniature, she's pushing 300#. Pigs train very well. Even had 2 feral hog shoats I raised. Sallymae got to be 400 plus and roamed free around the house and slept in the hen house, until she took a liking to eating hens. Best bacon I've ever had in my life and 5 gallons of rendered lard.
Goats are a pain to me. Narragansett turkeys where my favorite pets of all time. I was momma to them until the neighbors dog wiped out my flock, wondering what his new pet is.

The best non-dog pet would be one of them little dogs I guess.

Twerpy has a rabbit (stinks to high hell, it's cute, but I'm absolutely not a fan of the smell) Also a yellow belly slider (very similar to a red ear) He's pretty rad, and has a good personality. We've had him for 3 years or so, he's pretty low maintenance. Change the water once a week, and feed him pellets, with some occasional worms and veggies as treats. Gotta keep a UV lamp and a basking lamp (bulbs burn out every 6 months or so, not a biggie)

Since phrases now like kick the dog or so mad I could strangle a kitten are bad...and a lot on TBH think hogs deserve whatever they get just get a hog.

Then anytime any family member gets mad they can just kick it in the guts as hard as they want. Do not worry as a lot of TBHers will also tell you that doing so will in no way determine if a person is good or bad...as it's just a pig.
