I decided to "cut back" after visiting my brother-in-law, whose dying of cancer. He and my sister have a 3 year old. I was talking to my GF on the way home from that visit about their situation, and when I stopped to get gas, I got out my can, put in my last dip and tossed the can.

I broke down on a couple hunting trips, but nothing other than that. I still have cravings, but they are managable now. it's been about 2.5 months for me. And, right now I'm feeling pretty good.

Good luck to you, find something to take your mind off of it.

The withdrawals are severe. I remember well. An old gentlyman told me, right before you give in, put a dip of pure coffee grounds in the lip. Sounds crazy, but it worked. I think its what got me through. I used the coffee for about 3 weeks and I have been clean ever since

Get you some Red Man instead. At least you'll be off the can

Seriously, cinnamon toothpicks helped me. So did sunflower and pumpkin seeds. I found that I just wanted to have something in my mouth to chew on, not necessarily tobacco.

Way to go man! As a dentist I'll tell you, you are doing the absolute right thing. You really do not want to go a round with cancer. It is nasty stuff. Why some get it and some don't I really can not tell you, but do you want to spin the wheel and land on "you got cancer". Again as a dentist, watch out what you decide to use as your replacement. The 30 Jolly Ranchers a day will lead not only to weight gains, but man you can wreck your teeth fast. I don't want discourage your quitting, just keep in mind what might be lurking around the corner. Sugar free is your friend. Best of luck, and prayers for your comfort as you get rid of one nasty habit. ,

The first 4 days are the worst. You have already done the hardest part, you stopped.

The cravings will go from all the time to those times your alwayss had a dip, like after a meal, leaning back in the easy chair watching Bay Watch, or dringin down the road. So, managin the cravings will be further apart.

All you have to do is manage each craving as it comes along, I did it by telling myself that I could hold out just a little longer. Pretty soon week, then months , then years
                    had went by.

One side effect that you will notice is that you will have cash showing up in your wallet.
I recommend that you take this cash and go and kill something with a sharp stick to take the edge off every no and then.

It's been 9 years for me, since this past Jan, after a 25 year can a day habit. It can be done.

Keep yourself busy, it will keep your mind off of it. Find stuff to do that you usually didn't do when you dipped. Also, don't buy any. When I was quitting, that is what helped me the most. I just didn't have any around me. I don't know how man times I said screw and I drove to the gas station. Then I would pull up and put my truck in park. Then I would say to my self, I can't believe you are going to let a little can whoop your arse! Then I would drive off. Good Luck.

Very proud of you man. If I could break my addiction to Little Debbie snack cakes I would be 1/2 the man I am today!

The physical craving gets better after the third day, but the mental part of it's still there for a LONG time...you are doing good by using candy to get through the beginning...

Now you just have to resist the temptation to EVER take a dip again...If you start to cheat even a little bit (telling yourself "just one can" for the weekend at the hunting lease...) you will be right back on the stuff.

                              LOL.

I have promised myself that if I ever find out I have an incurable terminal disease the first thing I'm gonna do is buy a can of Cope....
