    Drill Stem Pipe Fence Post

Looking at building some fence and I’m looking at using drill stem for the corners and line post. Anyone have any idea what the life expectancy would be for unpainted drill stem? Looking at using 4” for the corners and 2” for the line post.

Buy new and they will last a long time. Cap them with someone.

You won't ever have to worry about replacing them again in your lifetime.

I was looking at new also and the price wasn’t too bad. I also priced galvanized and it’s around 3-4 times as much as black pipe.

We put a drill stem fence around my parents place nearly 40 years ago. Some painted- some of it never got painted. All of it is holding up great.

You know from what I’ve gleaned just here it’s all about the quality of your welder, machine and the pipe. Some of that pipe is magnetized and sux to weld up if the other two sides of that triangle can’t catch up.

                    Schedule 40 I believe.

Anybody ever use 2" pipe for fence post of a wooden privacy fence?

At least! Just make sure to put enough concrete in the hole that it “mounds” up several inches above ground level so water never stands in the hole around your pipe. And weld pipe caps on the posts.

We always mix the concrete, pour in the hole, overfilled of course, then shove the pipe in the hole so the concrete gets up inside the pipe from bottom up. Then with the excess concrete, “mound” it up around the bottom of the pipe at ground level. I put some corner posts in the ground 25 years ago that look like they were done yesterday.

Of course erosion is always a concern...depending on location.

Let me know if you need some caps cut from 1/8” plate, we do quite a few out of scrap for people and they always like them.

Your common drill stem is 2 3/8” schedule 40 and 2 7/8 is pretty available as well. Larger isn’t as common here especially used.

Why not just tubing? Something like a J55 grade pipe?

i used the 2 7/8 for about 2000' of fence. That stuff is seriously strong. I capped them to keep water out and I suspect that fence will be around longer than me.
