Best MPG Full Size Crew Cab 1/2 Ton???

My wife’s commute is about to double when we move into our new house. She currently is driving a gas guzzling Toyota sequoia.

At this point, best case scenario she is getting 17 to 18 on the highway and around 12 or 13 mpg on mixed driving.

We are considering a full size crew cab truck 2wd half ton.

Reading a lot of stuff online from reviews and vehicle websites, it appears that the two best full size crew cab half ton trucks with the best fuel economy are the six cylinder Chevrolet‘s and Fords.

We will by gently used 2017-2018 vehicle regardless which way we go.

They’re marketing those two brand with 6 cylinder engines at 19/25ish (city/highway) mpg give it take a gallon.

If we go this route we will be adding a bed cover and grill guard. And it will hold two car seats at least for the next 4 to 5 years.

What are the thoughts of the TBH Braintrust?

My brother had a 2003 Chevy 1500 with the V-6. Now this did not have any type of turbo or anything but that truck had no power. Even just driving around with an empty bed, it was slow to accelerate, and driving in the hill country was a PITA getting up some of the hills. Just my $.02 but I would give up a few MPG's for a V-8. Nowadays there are some that are pretty fuel efficient.

I'm not sure the V6 will give you any better mileage than the V8 to be honest. I drive a 2018 GMC half ton crew 4x4 and I get about 17.5 mixed and consistently get 20 on the highway with the 5.3 V8

        I get 20 mpg in a 5.0 F150...highway driving not hauling anything. Average/mixed driving is about 18. When I carry a trailer I get about 12/14.

The Turbos will fool ya because your average driving does not include kicking that turbo in.

Whatever you do, don't get a Toyota Tundra. I love mine because it's paid off...but i'm paying an arm and a leg on gas. They gotta be the worst fuel efficient V8 of all the trucks. But, at 208,000 miles without any serious issues and has never spent a night in a garage broken down, that's also nice.

No personal experience but I've heard the F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost does pretty well on fuel and is very peppy.

I don’t think you will beat the ecoboost for mileage.

The 5.7 hemis are capable if excellent highway mileage in the 2wd 3.21 rearend / 8 speed scenerio.

My wife’s 2016 lie-o meter has rarely seen under 18 (maybe twice) and that’s with her idling a lot.
On the road it will easily pull 21-23 with an all time best of ~ 25’s on a road trip to Kansas.
I know the lie-o meter isn’t exact, but the few times I checked it it wasn’t too far off.

Btw, it had been to date (nock on wood) a trouble free vehicle so far at ~46,000 miles. As in no trips to the dealer aside from a couple of recalls and oil changes.

I hopped in a coworker’s truck with this engine a few months ago to move it for a crane to get in the parking lot and his Lio- meter wasReading 23.3 miles per gallon. That’s back-and-forth to work. Without him resetting it.

Pretty impressive and supposed to have decent power.

You will either pay at the pump. Or pay at the shop. Rather pay at the pump

I have a 2017 Ram 1500 4x4 with 5.7 hemi and 8 speed. I get 21 on the highway, 22 with a tailwind. Pretty good considering it has 400hp. However city driving is about 15... probably related to that 400hp...

Keep the Sequia and get a daily car to drive all the way into town.

I have buddy with a Ram ecodiesel that gets around 30 mpg on the highway. It did throw two rods before it's first oil change so there's that.

You drive downhill all day or have they just gotten that much more fuel efficient? I drive a 2014 Sierra 1500 4wd with a leveling kit and 33's (pretty sure) and I don't get anywhere near that. I average 13.5.
