First off, I am sorry to hear about this. I know it is tough and we have all lost game but, that does not make it any easier. Keep your search up.

Secondly, I know you already sort of pointed this out but, if you think you are going to need a dog it is best to get on the phone ASAP when you realize you need one. I cannot speak for all tracking dogs but the majority of them are trained to trail blood. My dog does not even wince at the smell of a deer or something dead as he is trained to not chase those smells. We have so many deer and so much stuff die naturally that he would end up wearing us out!

When the blood is over a day old it gets really tough to follow. Now I am sure there are still some dogs that could do it but your average dog is not going to. I know in South Texas the nice thing is that as soon as they think they might need a dog, like within a couple of hours after the hit we will get the call. The sooner the call the better your odds.

One other thing you might consider if you really think he is dead is to rent a helicopter for an hours our two. I know of a couple that fly in the area on a regular basis and you might be able to spot him from the air if you can navigate them into the area you knew he was in.

We tracked one the other day that was 45 hours old but all the conditions were right for it. Quad is right the quicker you can get a dog on them the better.

Your best bet is to watch for buzzards but you will need to be there each day because they can pick one clean in one day. Buzzards can smell rotting flesh over ten miles away and will zero in on it no matter what cover the deer is in.

How did the buck act when you jumped him 5 hours after the shot?

We tracked a doe here in area 5 (not mine) that was shot high. I'm pretty sure shes still alive, we jumped her and she ran pretty well. If my sister or I get a shot on her we'll make sure shes dead this time. Keep looking, you never know. Sorry to hear it happened to you, but its happened to all of us.

I don't have a tracking dog, but if you ever need my help, just let me know. Love to track.

I believe Mike Socha is in San Angelo. He used to come to Big Lake for us when we had one down. I don't want to post his number, but I believe I got in touch with him at Texastrackers.com

Hang in there, MSBoy. Most of us have been there. It's an extremely frustrating part of bowhunting and is sometimes unavoidable, whether we all admit it or not.

The two best bucks I have ever drawn on went unrecovered, one last year and one in 2003. Both scenarios nag me to DEATH still.

I used to loose 30% of the hogs I shot. I have been using a Bow Bug for the last year or so and have had 100% success with it so far.

Get a dog tracker immediately if there is any chance of him being dead. If he's still alive he'll whole up at a watering hole or will go back to his bedding area once the initial shock wears off. If you know where he lives. He should be close. If he's mature he should be within about 50 acres of where he beds down.

Hope you found him. I too lost a deer this season and found him a day later with buzzards. I makes you sick. It would be nice to get everything you shoot but it doesn't happen no matter what weapon you are using. Good Luck
