Shot a nice 10 point friday morning at my lease near Mertzon (irion county). I thought that I had stroked him. He was quartering away slightly and I did not get a pass thru, so I assumed my arrow was stuck in his opposite shoulder. Blood trailed him for 1/2 mile and jumped him 5 hours after the shot. Have not been able to find anymore blood after he got up. Headed back out there tonight to look for buzzards the next few days. I have pics of him and will post them later. I think he's around 135".
My arrow worked its way through him about 100 yards after the shot and was covered in blood. The broadhead and vanes were covered in that red jelly-like blood you see when cleaning them (especially around shoulder shots). I just dont understand it. The only thing I can think is that I hit him farther forward than I thought. None of the blood looked like lung blood. Once the arrow came out the blood trail got worse. I was thinking it was going to get better.
I'm going to look for buzzards tomorrow and wednesday and maybe walk around to see if I can smell a dead deer. I hate to impose on people, but it sure would be nice if someone who had nothing better to do tomorrow afternoon had a dog that may be able to sniff out a dead one. I think its too late to try to put one on his trail, but he may be able to smell him dead from downwind. I am flying back into abilene tonight at 9:30. If someone with a dog is willing they can leave a message on my cell phone (713-818-2015). I dont want anyone to have to drive far, but maybe someone from san angelo could. I will pay them. I believe that deer is dead somewhere.
