I just picked up a Summit Viper on Craigslist for $75.
Search 'For Sale' section, expand radius to comfortable driving distance and look for "tree stand".

    They pop up pretty regularly.

Yep, I’ve been eyeballing some of those super lightweight machined aluminum stands with the climbing sticks. Couple of my spots don’t have any good trees for the climber.

Then you’ve never had the right set up. Or just can’t hang sticks. I gave up my climber once I move to the lock on and sticks. The mobility vs a climber is just the same or better. Versatility, climber can’t match it. And I could be 20’ up with my sticks and lock on as fast or faster than most with a climber.

I agree. I also agree with the viper for a climber but that's after you get rid of their bulky junk seat and instal a hazmore net seat.

              No.
You have to tie off sticks and tie off stand. There is no tying off a climber.
I prefer lock ons, but use climbers quite often when I find a new spot I want to check out.
If you care to make a wager I am all game...

Climbers have their place and I’m not knocking them. More times than not, you’re hunting a tree and not the deer. My sticks and lock on will go in any tree. Unless you’re in a pine forest where there is nothing but slicks, I guess it doesn’t matter much.

If someone is using a climber for a spot they plan to hunt often then they are doing it wrong imo.
My idea for a climber is for a few hunts just to see if the area is being travelled or not. If it is, then a lock on will be going up in the desired location.
The op said “mobile”. I took that as moving often. You can’t beat a climber for that.

Yes and no. Depends on how far I’m walking (note: I don’t hunt in pine tree areas)

If going blind... loc on- I can literally hunt any tree that will hold me up

... but if In an area and like it, and notice a tree that climber will work. Next trip in May be the climber (I think they are more comfortable)

Speed wise on a straight tree -climber.... add a limb- lock on. With spikes I’ll fly past both

The right lock on set up is mobile. I do have a few permanent stands, but I also move around a lot on our place. Anytime I go in with my mobile set up, I set up in the dark before the morning hunt and take it down after the hunt. Set it back up for the evening and take it back down in the dark. It is very mobile. Normally if the tree isn’t a PITA, I can drop my set up off my back and be sitting with my bow in my hand in about 6 minutes.

Have you looked into saddle hunting? Most mobile and lightweight option out there. check out some YouTube videos. All day comfort and you are able to keep the tree between you and the deer so your hidden better.

Knock off 4 minutes and your right there with a climber.
But, there would be another 6 minutes for you to take down...

I did line work for 5 years right out of high school. You ain’t standing on hooks comfortably after about 30 to 45 minutes.

For you, probably. For a lot, it’s not the norm. For some, it takes several minutes just to get the climber wrapped around the tree and at the right angle so they are level when they reach their peak. I’m not having a pizzing match. The OP asked about mobile set ups and I offered up what in my opinion, is a great mobile set up that offers lots of versatility. And yes, it’s still a fast way to get up pretty much any tree in the woods, where a climber cannot. Pros vs cons. Does the OP want to save an extra couple of minutes and hunt a tree that’s not really exactly where he wants to be, or sacrifice a very small amount of time and be right in the wheel house.

When people ask for mobility, climbers are always the first thing that’s thrown out. And while I’m not against them, they aren’t the only means to be mobile. That is why I suggested it. I personally like my sticks and lock-on better than a climber. Everybody is different.

... I hang loc on. 20-25’.... 1 minute. Hang stand... another minute. Done

I ain’t hunting in hooks. No way
